General Advice

  • Anticipate content/language – Read title, look at accompanying picture and think of possible ideas and language in the text.
  • Do easy ones first and do not spend too much time on one answer.

Part 5 Multiple choice

Main consideration – The answers are in order in the text so you do not need to read it before you look at the questions

  • Underline key words for question number 1. Think of similar, opposite and related words. Do not read option answers yet.
  • Look for answer in the text. Look for key words then carefully read the parts of the text where the answers are.
  • Decide answer then choose from possible options. Next, do number 2.

Part 6 Gapped texts

Main consideration – There are both thematic connections between the paragraphs where you can see the text ideas developing naturally, and linguistic connections using language such as pronouns, linkers and question marks.

  • Read the sentences around the gaps in the texts. Underline key words (names, other nouns, linkers) and anticipate what the missing information in the gap will be about.
  • Look at missing sentences and underline key words. These should be thematic (related to topic), and linguistic. Guess where the sentences can go in the text.
  • Check more carefully to confirm answers. Do thematic connections first.
  • For the more difficult answers, look more closely at the linguistic connections to insert the less obvious answers.

Part 7 Multiple matching

Main consideration – All the statements have two three pieces of information. Everything needs to correspond with the text information to be a match.

  • Know differences between similar sentences – Underline key words in all question sentences. Each question’s combination of points will be unique.
  • Read with a focus – Use the key words to find the answers.
  • Be systematic – Start with the first text, then the second…etc.
